Handover
No car is delivered to the door in the centre of Megève, and no honest operator will tell you otherwise. The pedestrian zone is defined street by street by municipal order and covers eighteen of them, including the whole of the Place de l'Église, the Rue Charles Feige from the church to the Rue d'Oberstdorf, the Rue Monseigneur Conseil from the church to the Rue de la Poste, the Rue de la Petite Taverne, and the Passage des Cinq Rues and Impasse du Chamois entire. Retractable bollards control every entry, and the access regulation is explicit: they stay raised seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day. No open window in the morning, no quiet hour at night. A company promising you a handover in front of the church has not read the order.
What exists instead is a category, and it is worth knowing its number because it governs every chauffeured arrival in this village. Category 8 covers private-hire vehicles, hotel shuttles other than the three hotels physically inside the zone, collective transport and any taxi that is not a Megève taxi. Those vehicles enter by one bollard only, the Rue d'Arly, reached from the roundabout at the post office. They leave by one bollard only, the Rue Saint François. The route between the two is compulsory, and the time allowed inside is fifteen minutes, for genuine pick-up and drop-off and nothing else. The designated bay is Le Lavoir, at the junction of the Rue d'Arly and the Passage des Cinq Rues. Access needs a badge issued by the Police Municipale, at 2001 Route Départementale 1212, and the badge is personal and cannot be lent. Overstay three times and it deactivates itself; you then reprogramme it at the police station within seventy-two hours.
The asymmetry is deliberate, and it is the reason a local car sometimes beats a better car. Inside the zone, pedestrians and horse-drawn carriages hold priority over cars, at walking pace — the carriages are not decoration, they are category one in the regulation, alongside emergency services, with access at any hour for the duration of the job. Roughly twenty wait on the square under the big fir tree from 15 December to 15 April, in July and August, and over All Saints.

So the practical handover points sit outside the bollards, and they come with ceilings. The three covered structures give the first thirty minutes free. A Sprinter-height shuttle fits in none of them, which leaves the open-air Palais car park or Le Jaillet. Elsewhere in the centre, surface parking is disc-regulated 09:00 to 20:00 all year, from thirty minutes to ten hours depending on the street.

The compensation for all this is the transfer itself. Geneva to Megève is around 88 km — the A40 towards Chamonix, out at junction 20 for Sallanches, then the D1212 for the last dozen kilometres — and it runs a little over an hour when the road is clear. That is roughly half the time to Courchevel and a third of the time to Val d'Isère from the same airport. Two things to have priced in advance: the route uses a short section of Swiss motorway, so a vignette matters for a car collected on the French side, and the climb from Sallanches gains about 555 m over 10.6 km at an average of 5.2 per cent. Not severe. Continuous, and in winter, inside the equipment obligation.
The A40 is the constraint, not the mountain. The concessionaire's own figures put winter weekend traffic at three times normal, around 80,000 vehicles on a peak Saturday, with the worst windows 09:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 20:00. Bison Futé classified Saturday 21 February 2026 red for Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and told drivers to avoid the A40 between Mâcon and Passy from 11:00 to 16:00 outbound. There is also a structural measure most people meet without understanding it: at peak periods all light vehicles heading for Chamonix and Italy are forced off at junction 21 Passy and rejoin the RN205 at Le Fayet, so the motorway can stack lorries on two lanes. Megève traffic leaves earlier, at Sallanches, but shares the same saturated trunk to get there. And from 1 November to 31 March the limit between Vallard and Le Fayet drops from 130 to 110 under the Arve valley air quality plan.
Winter tyres are a legal obligation in Haute-Savoie, applied to the whole road network by prefectural order of 30 September 2021, from 1 November to 31 March, across 279 communes — Megève among them. Four winter or all-season tyres, or chains or snow socks carried on board; studded tyres exempt you from the rest. The department publishes a €135 fine and possible immobilisation, though the Senate has noted that penalties still await a further decree. Either way, every car we arrange here in that window leaves compliant, because the exposure in an accident is not a question of enforcement.
The altiport is a real one and a limited one. It sits at 1,472 m on the Route de la Côte 2000, five to seven kilometres out, owned and run by the commune, with a slope of about seven per cent, visual flight only, daylight hours only, and a mountain qualification required for aeroplanes. Published runway lengths vary between sources, which is why we do not quote one. The fact that changes plans is simpler and rarely mentioned: the runway is not cleared of snow in winter. Mont Blanc Hélicoptères and Aérocime are based there, and it handles something like 15,000 movements a year, but a winter arrival by fixed wing is not something to build a schedule on.
Two dates to hold. The snow polo — the BMW Polo Masters — is played at the end of January on the esplanade beside the sports centre, which is exactly where the open-air overflow parking is. The Megève Jazz Contest runs 10 to 12 July 2026 for its thirtieth edition, with eight orchestras playing in the streets through the village, and the order allows the commune to close the pedestrian zone entirely during events. Both are worth planning a handover around rather than through.
Summer is a real season here rather than a courtesy. The Mont d'Arbois gondola runs 20 June to 6 September 2026, the Rochebrune cable car — the first in France built for skiers, running since 1933 — from 4 July, and the Golf du Mont d'Arbois plays April to November at an average altitude of 1,320 m, laid out by Henry Cotton on ground opened by Noémie de Rothschild in the 1920s. The carriages keep running in July and August too, which is the reminder that the fifteen-minute rule is not a winter measure. It applies the day you arrive, whatever the month.
Delivery and handover
Villa, hotel, airport, heliport, berth — you give us the address, we work out what it takes to put a car there. In Cannes that is the entry height of the garage. On the Rocher in Monaco, it is the number plate. We check before we confirm.

Yes. Villa, hotel, berth, chalet, or Geneva. Give us the exact location in your request — that is what lets us answer in minutes rather than hours.
Not all of them, and that is worth knowing before you choose. Access, ceiling heights and restricted zones rule some cars out street by street. Every vehicle page names the cities we deliver it to, and winter adds its own filter on tyres and clearance. If the one you want is not listed for Megève, give us the dates anyway — the network moves.
They are set by the partner supplying the car, not by us: deposit, minimum age, licence seniority and mileage vary from one to the next. They are stated in the written proposal before anything is confirmed. We act as an intermediary; the deposit and the insurance are held by that partner.
